It's not surprising that Chad is looking into new cities, with a population that has almost doubled in the past 20 years. The idea of placing it near the old captial follows similar plans in Egypt and Madagascar, as well as satellite cities in Ghana and Nigeria.

The FT makes clear just how dependent Egypt's economy has become on military embezzlement and construction projects in the desert. Interesting to see the Egyptian intelligensia rehash the "good tsar, bad boyars" argument that facilitated Putin's Russia.

Madagascar's government seemed all too eager to let anyone and everyone invest in their new city. Emirati, Egyptian, and South African firms are all mentioned as involved in the construction, but what are they getting in return?

IJStad appears to be a "big project for the sake of having a big project". There's a lack of evidence that there's so little land in the Netherlands that new polders are required, but politics seems to reward the most audacious proposals foremost.

Liberal party Democrats 66 has just won the Dutch election on a plan of "thinking big". Part of this, apparently, is building a new city on a nature reserve, with 9 more following after.

New "economic hubs" failing to attract anyone from surrounding cities seems to be a very common theme. What makes this different from somewhere like KAEC is that India is (debatably) a democracy, and prohibition is actually quite popular in Gujarat!

Would it really be a smart city without a needlessly confusing corportate structure? Even as this article is mostly just repeating press releases, I notice they avoid giving any kind of timeline for completion.

I have to admit, saying that your project will be "bigger than Singapore"... in area... is a bit that I would not have thought of. The fact that this project has been in the works for almost 20 years and is nothing but trees is not a good sign for that.

This is a fairly glowing article for a city that, as of 2025, has a lot of hurdles to clear before it can even break ground. This urban planner can certainly talk a big game, but he may have a harder time convincing voters of his authenticity.

The recent history of Egypt seems to be a constant battle to see which is larger: The pockets of the gulf monarchies, or the ability of El-Sisi to squander investment. Its latest development: a 35 billion dollar deal to dump concrete in the desert.

It's hard to tell whether Yatai ever believed in this "haven for the super-rich" idea or if scam centres were the plan from the start. If it's the latter, at least that represents a feasible business model...?

If cities developed by private enterprises are a marker of neoliberalism, what about a city entirely dedicated to America's premier oligarch? The throughline of this article is the incredible, colonial-level power that this billionaire's corporation can exhibit.

This guy clearly knows his stuff when it comes to new cities. He's in the opposition party and is free, for now, to make pie-in-the-sky proposals, but you don't usually see promoters of these "powerpoint cities" bring up actual, real examples like Putrajaya.

A Namibian investment company wishes to finance a project that would cost six times the entire GDP of Namibia. Namibia has an incredibly high unemployment rate (>30%) so it's not surprising that "New Jobs" would be a major selling point.

I must admit that I haven't thought about Lusail in years, since the world cup - and by the looks of it, nobody else has either. Spending billions of dollars hosting the world's biggest sporting event is textbook sportswashing.
