People We Meet on Vacation, Emily Henry

Easily the most charming and fun couple in any of her books

By Night in Chile, Roberto Bolaño

Really lyrical and beautiful prose, and a really, really fucked up narrator. I think it’s a good look at someone with a low view of anyone they view as “beneath” them, and what denial looks like when confronting complicity in atrocity.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Leo Tolstoy

That tolstoy fellow certainly has a way with words

It cuts off “remembering them” for the end of the paragraph but still: popping off

Death of Ivan Ilyich already popping off

A Deadly Education, Naomi Novik

It’s a cute time. Novik can be very creative, El & Orion are cute, i relate to El’s general trust issues. I think it can be juvenile (as…intended?) & i can’t say i don’t get why someone called it a harry/draco fic, but i’ll read the other two.

The Redemption of Galen Pike, Carys Davies

Carys Davies goes some very surprising and interesting places and I like that about her.

Clear

I thought this was beautifully written and engaging. I can understand complaints about the ending; it’s honestly too quickly resolved in a way that is admittedly unrealistic. I think it’s sweet and a good read overall, though.

Nineteen Claws & a Blackbird, Agustina Bazterrica

It got a little old after a while ngl

Vita Nostra, Marina & Sergey Dyachenko

This was so interesting! I haven’t read much Ukrainian/Russian contemporary lit & i’d love to read more. It was such a good take on the Magical School and such a cool concept of reality as language. A bizarre, ominous, great time!

Authority, Jeff Vandermeer

I fear i just don’t click with jeff vandermeer’s work. Really fucking dragged, in my opinion. Didn’t click with it at all, which is a shame, because the ideas are interesting.

All the Water in the World, Eiren Caffall

The first half was good but the second half could’ve been fleshed out more. Enjoyed the Olana cameo. If you like gauzy vibes based writing you’ll probably enjoy this but if you want something more substantial you should just read Station Eleven.

Beach Read, Emily Henry

I have some thoughts on january’s Solemn Literary Novel and how it kind of disregards prose styles in literary vs genre writing, and some thoughts on the new eden plot, but they’re inarticulate & kind of mean. The romance itself was cute!

I mean i wouldn’t call it “well written” but it’s really charming and i like the ideas yarros is trying to explore so i’m gonna keep reading

Bring Up the Bodies, Hilary Mantel

One step closer to reaching my goal of finally finishing the mirror and the light…anyway, as always, the last ~150 pages of this book is insane
