These are process pictures I took of my small art exercise from a workshop on Structures & World Building in animation. (2025)

A digital page with a box frame taking up 2 thirds of the page. There is a red line within the middle of the box frame as the horizon line.

On the page, while going in & outside the box frame, is a creepy evil smile looking mermaid like creature with pointy fingers & 5 fins. They look towards a lightly drawn underwater cave that has a ledge sticking out from the outside to the side. The mermaid creature sees a squid & octopus going inside the underwater cave entrance. Between them & the mermaid creature, there are objects like a medium-sized rock, a big clam, a small barrow, some kelp stalks, & a small row boat broken in half while in the sand.

This is the digital page again, but cropped to focus on the mermaid creature's sketched body & the detail done within the box frame.

Inside the box frame, everything has been given various grey tones or changed to black & white figures. This was to help demonstrate who or what was in the foreground, midground, & background of the digital art piece. The main subjects were the squid & octopus duo in white while the mermaid creature was in black/dark gray.

The digital page was cropped once more in order to focus the detail work done within the box frame.

After everything was basically grayscaled within the box frame, everything has given highlights & shadows without the sketch layer for this picture. This helps everything in the foreground, midground, & background of the digital art piece to pop out with depth & not seem as flat.

Once the shadows & highlights were applied within the box frame, I reused the sketch layer in order to help me figure out the placement of textures that will be applied.

I added sand like textures for the sand & stone like textures for the rock & underwater cave. This was an attempt to make it have more 3D/stylized realistic depth. I also applied a little dull blue layer at 25% to 50% opacity as a mood coloring to the underwater feel.

It is a sleeping Pokémon, Vulpix, the six-tailed fire type Pokémon. It is sleeping soundly like a pet would in a home with cross-hatching shadow underneath its body, eyes closed, & tilted ears. It is having dark dream bubbles that lead to one bubble with a white heart inside.
