I've always been really confused by our reluctance to use him there, especially in less important games.

I wonder if this has come about in part because of the minutes he's played after such a long layoff. He seems far more reserved in an attacking sense compared to the start of the season.

And surely by now, given it happens every match, we know what's coming

Feel like this is part of the problem though. Structure works up until we're faced with a deep block, and then no one knows what to do. Ends up in a horseshoe of death

And even just having some shots from the edge of the area draws the defence out so they can't just set up camp

Feels indicative of the team as a whole too (bar Saka). All so reticent to take a shot and never ready to hit one first time. Makes it much easier to defend against since the opposition don't have to worry about leaving the edge of the area to block a shot from distance.

Feel like this is exactly his problem, so passive so often.
