Stayed up two hours past my bedtime reading this mystery. Husband and wife team Nikki French is top notch!

I’m not a plant person. I mean I like them , of course, but I’m always forgetting to water them or at a loss about repotting, uh fertilizing, mites and ???. Recently, however, I found a neglected sweet potato on the kitchen counter and on a whim put it in some water…long story short: 💚 (baby steps)

I’m not really a pack rat, but I do have a half dozen banker’s boxes of memorabilia. Went thru some today. Maybe I’ll post a few items from time to time? Here’s a Polaroid of Jim Morrison’s grave in Pere Lachaise cemetery on New Year’s Day 1984. The bust vanished in 1988 👻 and was found this May! ☮️🖤

I highly recommend for a good old fashioned beach read. The story unfolds smoothly. A young family leaves Manhattan post pandemic for a reboot in a small southern town. Wife opens popular diner. City officials clique shares a dark secret. This novel could easily fill out a Netflix series like Ozark.

Twist is a beautiful tale of the sea, an unknowable man and an ineffable love. The high level of prose and story recall Conrad to many, but to me, the “hero” Conway, and his love Zanelle, deeply reminded me of Gatsby and Daisy and the green light that always recedes just over the horizon. A classic!

I’ve now satisfied my curiosity about Murakami. He makes charming cocktails with his influences. Odd Kafka, sweet Brautigan, romantic Fitzgerald, deep Dostoyevsky, adolescent Salinger all surface like dolphins leaping into the sunlight. So fitting that libraries appear as islands in the sea. 🙏📚🌴🐬🩷

This is the second novel I’ve read by Murakami. I sit gazing at the sky. What a magic 900 page beast. Weighs 3 pounds. A six day journey. And yet, a simple love story. Well, maybe not so simple. Maybe a bit of sci-fi and a fantasy too. And a thriller. In a way. So, have you noticed the second moon?

How to describe this novel? A rhapsody on a theme of first love, a dream to live in, how to escape, join, or make peace with your shadow, blueberry muffins and the coffee shop woman, the yellow herd of enervated unicorns, a reader of bookshelf of forgotten dreams, the echo of a head librarian…? 💝🫶💖
