When I used to help coach wheelchair basketball, there was a very small girl in the group, maybe even half my age.

She was always very reserved on court. Then I came across her skiing, and not only was she beyond me, but other adults in terms of skill. She quietly knew it with a smile.

American Culture has developed to a point where intergenerational interactions are now only seen as acceptable in the modalities of professional mentorship, neighborhood (barely), and blood relativity.

Adults are inherently villainized, rather than granted responsibility. Teens are infantilized.
