District Judge Sara Ellis' injunction order limits how and when feds can use gas in the Chicago area.

It restricts the use of gas in "residential or commercial areas" that could risk injury to a plaintiff class member "who is not causing an immediate threat of physical harm to another person"

Federal immigration agents have deployed gas in Little Village, on 26th between Komensky and Pulaski, per videos shared online after 11 am this morning.
November 8, 2025 at 5:43 PM
Immigration agents are also present in Chicago's near southwest suburbs this morning; video shared online around 9 am shows agents taking at least one man near 21st and Clarence in Berwyn, IL.

New: Pablo Moreno González and Felipe Agustin Zamacona, two men formerly held at the Broadview, IL ICE facility, and now the named plaintiffs in a federal class action alleging inhumane treatment at the facility, are being released from federal custody per a successful habeas petition.
November 7, 2025 at 9:02 PM
Another video confirming Bovino's presence was shared online about an hour ago in Park City, IL, which borders Waukegan and is closer to the Wisconsin border than to Chicago.

Even if bystanders weren't audibly heckling Bovino in the videos, the haircut is unmistakable.

Rev. Abby Holcombe of the River Forest Methodist Church, another plaintiff shot with pepper balls: "I have one more message for Greg Bovino, Kristi Noem, the ICE agents who shot at me and all other ICE agents and president Trump: God is always on the side of the oppressed. So which side are you on?"

Jennifer Crespo, cont: "But today, standing here with my fellow plaintiffs and the attorneys, I'm pretty emotional because I feel for the first time that maybe we aren't going to lose."
November 6, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Pastor David Black, another plaintiff whom federal agents have shot with pepper balls:

"My sincere desire is to see ICE agents delivered from the wickedness which binds their souls, and for all whom they have kidnapped & brutalized to be restored to the communities where they choose to belong."

Apologies for the delay! It was a long presser. Here's some highlights from some of the speakers, starting with attorney Steve Art's comments on federal agents abusing protestors, using tear gas and other weapons on Chicago streets:

The DOJ accuses Martinez of assulting/impeding a federal agent on Oct. 4, even after an agent shot her.

An exhibit filed yesterday shows text messages discussing media coverage of the case.

"I fired 5 rounds and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys."

This is the portion of the Broadview TRO that plaintiff's attorneys wanted beefier language on, btw.

We're back from break. For anyone following along, I need to note that I misquoted Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino in an earlier post.

I wrote he said, in his deposition, that "every use of force has been MORE than exemplary."

He actually said, "all uses of force have been MORE than exemplary."

Good morning from Chicago's federal courthouse. Inside, Judge Sara Ellis listens to preliminary issues in today's hearing on an injunction against federal immigration agents' violent behavior.

Outside, the IL Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights has organized a rally against the same behavior.

Here's an example from earlier this month, when an older white agent detained a Black young man and U.S. citizen outside a Walgreens on the South Side:
October 31, 2025 at 6:25 PM
The suit also claims people held at Broadview are being intentionally denied access to their attorneys in an effort to speed up the deportation process, and that immigration agents have coerced / threatened detainees into signing voluntary departure forms
October 31, 2025 at 2:17 PM
The details alleged in the suit get pretty lurid. Per multiple declarations, detainees are forced to sleep on the floor, amid "urine and dirty water" caused by clogged toilets.

The suit also claims there are cameras pointed at the toilets, causing detainees anxiety and concern over sexual abuse.
October 31, 2025 at 2:02 PM
New: a class action suit filed in Chicago's federal court this morning alleges overcrowding and inhumane conditions at the Broadview, IL ICE facility, as well detainees being denied legal counsel.

The plaintiffs say this amounts to 1A and 5A violations.
