Most people (pretty much everyone except for this crazy guy) think color is one- or two-dimensional, where one-dimensional is a typical spectrum range and two-dimensional is something like the CIE color chart or maybe a color wheel. It's not.

Very astute! In fact, the principles behind that equation can be seen in a CRI color chart. If you map ijk to RGB and ᴉɾʞ to YMC, you can see precisely how the components play with/against each other to create the full spectrum

Forgot to add that i, j, k and their inverses are color-coded to match CIE color space.

Once you start seeing the pattern, you start seeing that it's everywhere, in pretty much everything (see also: the golden ratio). For instance:
