I think why I find this rise in nihilistic violence so interesting and horrifying is that it’s mainly driven by despair. Violence not motivated by anger at the world, but just pure despair that corrodes you until you become this ball of violence, it’s awful and shows how much we have to fix

A lot of people think that societal change can only occur via institutional change so the minute it becomes clear that said institutions will not save us they fall into “well shit nothing we can do but roll over and wait for death” it’s like a whole other level of learned helplessness

To clarify it though I’m not shaming these folks for being depressed, I am shaming them for trying to drag others down into that same pit and framing their thoughts as truth. Shit not only prevents meaningful political action it’s also just prevents you from living life to the fullest. It’s sad :(

Yeah, they also always frame it “it’s better to live this way” and then when you scroll through their post history it’s always shit like “I’m miserable, I’m lonely, but I cant change anything so I just have to go through the motions until I die I guess”

I see it as a complete betrayal of progressivism as a concept imo. Like if you concede that a better future is not possible your conceding to the main throughline of fascism.

I do feel this in my bones though, it really hurts to see so many folks my age just resigned to the future being shittier than the past. Like I have genuine hope that the future can be good, but the cynicism is suffocating and bleeds into my own nagging sense of doom.

I feel like political doomerism is just not a productive mindset to be in. Like legitimately how can you actively push for progress when your headspace is “we’re all so fucked”. I ain’t gonna concede the future to the fascist, they can pry my solar punk ass future from my cold dead hands
