RIP Sheila Jordan, and thank you for so many years of musical expression.
She sang with a clarity of voice, that took the listener inside the song.

RIP Phil Lesh. Among the tributes to his musicianship and innovative bass guitar playing, let it not be forgotten that his mischievous sense of humor contributed to keeping the spirit of the Merry Pranksters alive.

Happy posthumous birthday, Larry Young (10/7/1940-3/30/1978).
The Mosaic Records set, containing his recordings for Blue Note, is a favorite touchstone.

At the SF Giants game last Wednesday, the Golden Winds, from Travis AFB, including flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, played a fittingly solemn version of the National Anthem. It was a refreshing change from the diva wannabes who frequently sing the anthem. More of this, please!

RIP Les McCann. He didn’t just try, he made it real, compared to whatever wasn’t.

Wayne Escoffery and his quartet (David Kikoski, Ugonna Okegwo, Marvin “Smitty” Smith) put in a great set, at the Black Cat, last night. After waiting a couple of years to see him in SF, it was a treat to hear this top-notch group.

It was a great performance by current and past members of the SFJAZZ Collective last night. Matt Penman, Robin Eubanks, Etienne Charles, Kendrick Scott, and Helen Sung hit it out of the park. Another wonderful show at the JHL!

@kairyssdal

A number that reads the same, forward and backward is called…(drum roll)…
a palindromic number.

That’s kind of a letdown, isn’t it?
