Like Edmund Dulac, I am fascinated by Tenggren's midlife style change. I think he was more successful with the Little Golden style than his previous work. I had the opportunity to browse his sketches and art while visiting the Kerlan Collection and was captivated by his storytelling. What a legend!🎨

After leaving Disney Studios in the early 1940s, Tenggren was one of the first artists hired to illustrate a new book series, Little Golden Books. He illustrated many classics, like "The Poky Little Puppy", which is considered the Bestselling Children's Book of All Time.

Tenggren eventually relocated to the USA and was hired by Walt Disney as concept artist for the studio's first feature film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves", conjuring imagery evocative of the Golden Age artists. He would continue to work with Disney on several features, including "Pinocchio".

He succeeded Jon Bauer as feature illustrator for the annual Bland Tomtar och Troll ("Among Gnomes and Trolls"), continuing in the art style established by Bauer.

🎉Happy Birthday to the incredibly versatile Gustaf Tenggren, who was born on this day back in 1896!

The Swedish-born Tenggren had three amazing acts to his career, which showcases his evolution as an artist:

As the chapter books were being illustrated, creature designs continued to be refined...

In continuing with celebrating the 20th anniversary of "Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You", here is a collection of preliminary sketches (some have never been shown) which reveal that creature design for this book happened over the course of many years. Enjoy!

Holly and I toured throughout the US and UK, promoting the release of "Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide." It was amazing to watch kiddos dive deep into the book I'd dreamed of creating for decades. We'd love to release a deluxe, oversized expanded edition someday...maybe for the 25th anniversary?🧚‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧌

September 2005, Rubin Pfeffer (then VP at Simon & Schuster) drove up from NYC to hand delivered the first copy of Spiderwick's Field Guide. Fortunately, both my parents happened to be up visiting that afternoon. For them to see how far I'd come in that moment is something I will always remember.

May 2nd, 2005: These were among some of the last pieces completed for the Field Guide. According to my journal, I was having trouble focusing for long periods of time at this point, likely from working nonstop since the fall.

April 10th, 2005: An abandoned take of "Perrault's Ogre". From my journal:

"I've been struggling with the ogre sketch. I've arrived at a good head design but I can't seem to get just the right pose. Perhaps I am making him look too much like Mulgrarath?"

"The mermaids are one of the creatures for this book that have been a driving force since it's inception. Even then, the mermaid design was drastically different than conventional imagery. I think the inspiration of seeing all those tropical fish while growing up in Florida has had an impact on me."
