*Edit: I meant “The risk of injure is high. They WOULDN’T get a chance to rest and redo.”

Long story short, it is fabulous to see a wheelchair using actress in a predominantly wheelchair using role, and it works very well for screen. But Nessarose not being played by wheelchair users on stage isn’t exactly a “wrong” in need of righting.

Ende.

I definitely think there should be more disabled representation on stage as well as screen, but for now, there’s not as much.
Add in rehearsals, touring, awkward stages, the fact that Nessa has a couple of specifically designed chairs to be used by whomever plays her at that point.

Not to mention, there are unfortunately very few roles of wheelchair users on stage. I’m sure there are more, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head. You’d be limited for jobs, while on screen there will be countless opportunities. (And yes, you can do both but it’s still limited on stage)

On screen, there is chance to do multiple takes. Chance to rest. A large supporting team to make sure you’re okay. Stunt doubles, editing, the works. There’s a very large safety net that isn’t there for stage performances. It’s a different world.

If any of this were to happen on stage, live, the least it could do is embarrass them. The risk of injure is high. They would get a chance to rest and redo. Sure, things go wrong on stage, but if your disability is the cause, it is not fun for you at all.

Wheelchair users who are able to walk will experience limb weaknesses, balance issues, pain, among other things. It could worsen their disability, even just for a short time. (I’ll add in that I have Multiple Sclerosis. I don’t use a wheelchair, but experience a lot of the above)

As a very big part of her character is that she does get to walk again. Granted it is for a short time, and there are indeed many wheelchair users who can walk for periods of time, but for a stage show? Almost every day? Sometimes multiple times a day? Let’s think about a few things here

I’ll say I’m definitely not an expert, having preformed on neither, but I know there are definitely a lot of differences between the two. And ordinarily it would be so good to have a wheelchair user in a wheelchair using role on stage, but Nessa’s situation is a little different…
