I like to believe there was a benevolent core idea somewhere in the very beginning.
(i.e. space fairing humans be like "let's remember to always stay human, bla bla.. purity... bla...")

But as with any religion over time, it got sidetracked to the point of absurdity and a blind/literal following.

You cannot pour from an empty cup though. Your wellbeing and happyness should always take priority.

If said happyness comes from pleasing others or not - that is a whole different topic.
