Yesterday, our Education Policy Officer, Bethany Bale, spoke to the APPG on SEND about the current landscape for Disabled children and their families.

Currently, they have to fight every step of the way to access basic rights, and then they’re scapegoated for the broken system.

The numbers are in – and they’re worrying. Since July 2022, of 487,000 new homes built, we estimate over 375,000 feature inadequate minimum accessibility standards.

As members of the HoME coalition, we are calling for policy change to ensure every new home is accessible.

The Government claims they are cutting benefits to 'encourage' Disabled people into work.

Yet with a disability pay gap of 17%, a underfunded Access to Work programme and reasonable adjustments overwhelmingly ignored, it is employers, not us, who need the incentive.

🚨Our Statement on the Benefit Cuts Vote and Concessions

Despite a majority of the public opposing these plans, MPs still voted through plans that will affect an estimated 700,000 people. Yet as the dust settles today, can we even be sure MPs know what they’ve voted for?
Disability Rights UK’s Statement on The UC and PIP Bill Vote and Concessions Disabled citizens across the country will today be enormously relieved that following major protests by Disabled people and significant rebellions from Labour MPs, cuts to Personal Independent Payments for existing and new claimants will not go ahead. However, serious concerns remain relating to the Government’s intention to press ahead with cuts to the health top-up of Universal Credit for people newly disabled after April 2026. The Personal Independence Payment and Universal Credit Bill still proposes making hundreds of thousands of Disabled people receiving Universal Credit poorer. Disabled people on Universal Credit are some of the poorest people in the country, even on current rates of payment, yet the Government intends to reduce the payment by £47 per week for new claimants. We’ve known all along that the public, Disabled people and our organisations have found this Bill to be unjust and unfair. Yet the government has used every tool in its arsenal, every procedural trick to push this dangerous bill through. Despite a majority of the public wanting the government to look elsewhere for savings than the disability benefits system, MPs still voted through cuts that will affect an estimated 700,000 people. Yet as the dust settles today, can we even be sure MPs know what they’ve voted for? Make no mistake: this floundering and chaos from the Government is a direct result of the steadfast work of Disabled campaigners and our allies, who have made it clear that this bill is unworkable. Despite attempts to silence us, through our collective campaigning, we made them drop billions of pounds worth of cuts, and we will continue to resist this disastrous bill.

His daughter, who has PIP, is devastated for friends in her college just a few years younger who will be tested under an even harsher system.

This bill is unworkable and must be scrapped.

The Government's welfare bill concessions will create a two-tiered system.

In real terms:
Two Disabled young people could be born just one month apart - and one would be assessed under the new 4-point rule, which makes it much harder to qualify for PIP daily living component.
Young Disabled people on Disability Living Allowance (DLA) move over to PIP once they are 16. A Disabled person who turns 16 in October 2026 will apply for PIP under the current rules. Another Disabled person, who turns 16 just one month later in November 2026, will be assessed under the new 4-point rule.
