in case you're wondering what kind of ttrpg campaign pitches my long-suffering players have to put up with, here's a peek behind the scenes
1. Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, 1815: The French Empire has fallen, but not before looting the riches of Italy and leaving much of the north in the hands of Austrian suzerains. Your patron is a Venetian merchant of noble lineage who has assembled a band to travel to Paris and restore to him a number of valuables—everything from paintings to rare books—which are rumored to have been taken into the personal collection of a Bonapartiste general. If the news is to be believes, Paris is currently in the grips of a new White Terror, a series of purges by ultra-royalists against the Bonapartistes, but only time will tell if this will hinder or aid you. 2. Empire of Ethiopia, 1440: Emperor Zara Yaqob of the House of Solomon has consolidated Christian rule over much of the Horn of Africa and as part of his efforts to improve relations with the Mother Church, he has ordered the assembly of a delegation to travel north to the land of Italia where, soon, a great council of all Christian churches is to be held in order to reaffirm the unity of all good peoples, but your mission also seeks to invite the skilled artisans, architects, and engineers of the Italian republics to return with you to the Ethiopian court to share their knowledge. 3. Pannonian Basin, 972: After a series of military defeats, the threat of the heathen raiders of of the Magyar federation have finally been contained, and this turn of events has resulted in the rapid consolidation of power by the pagan Grand Prince Géza Árpád, who is said to be a reformed who seeks closer ties to his Christian neighbors. It is now a race between Rome and Constantinople to see who can secure the faith (and therefore might) of the heathen horde occupying Pannonia. To this end, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Basil I, has dispatched a mission to Géza's court ahead of a tribal assembly to curry favor with the Grand Prince and his vassals.

The cool move in Microscope might well be to say “Oh, wait, what if each of the psionic cyborgs had like, an astral umbilical cord situation, and sometimes those cords got cut and the cyborgs were severed from the Hive Mind and became independent? But it was like, an existential crisis each time?”—a move that solves no problems for the characters in its redefinition (indeed, it probably only creates more), only redefines the world in an exciting way." "A cool move in a post-OSR game looks like, say, using the engine block from your party vehicle to run electricity through the toxic oil seeping out of the facility, thus shocking all the techno-goblins inside. Or surveiling the vice president’s wayward child for scandalous kompromat to use as leverage in gaining access to a CIA field base. Or even just jamming a pair of sabers through the handles of a door to hold off the Imperial soldiers trying to break in. Whatever. The point is, a cool move involves using the in-world resources and options available to the characters in an unexpected, powerful way. The options available to characters and the options available to the players are, for the most part, one and the same."

ive seen a lot of this bizarre form of toxic positivity both on and off bsky and while we do need people activated politically rather than withdrawing into despair, you definitely do not get there by accusing anyone publicly going through it of being an evil energy vampire

While I think the general discussion is worth having, one of my biggest issues with video game remake discourse is this: "originals" are allowed to be both of their time *and* "unique," whereas if the "remake" is likewise of its own time, it is a failure
