The key phrase here is "has always been." Seems like Brooks is hedging regarding "what it is now" or "what it might become very soon."

Maybe.... I think Trump's just fishing for more support in his home city by playing nice with Mamdani. It doesn't cost him anything in the present. To understand Trump, you have to think like a reptile. His reptilian political instinct told him to cozy up to Mamdani, nothing more than that.

So, what's so controversial about Mamdani and democratic socialism, after all, if voters support many of his ideas? Guess what Republicans have called Social Security and Medicare for the past 60-90 years - yes, socialism! Who the [blank] cares what it's called! In a democracy, it should become law!
