Four of my favorite digital pieces.

He pops out through the other side just a little higher than the entry side. He greets you with his hat, saying, “There seems to be a hole in your space-time continuum!” Digital painting. It’s a person’s profile, head and shoulder. Their face is separated from their body, pulled forward to let the essence slip slip from their mind. Their hair flows toward their face, winding and intertwining with the essence. Digital painting. Someone crouches on the floor, in defeat, in awe. Their head is lifted toward the ceiling, swallowed from the eyes up by a strange, glowing cloud. Upon the cloud are the words: Enjoy the view, child.

“Where the Water Tastes Like Wine”

POV varies, dependent on the part of the game. Walking portions are top-down(ish); everything else is illustration and first person meetings. Set in depression era US. Worth the play in today’s climate. Pleasantly surprised me. Now an all-time favorite. 10/10

Their face is only barely lit by the campfire, and they look to you expectantly. A circle of choices lays out before you, all strange symbols like a deviously grinning sun, a ship’s wheel, and the head of Lady Liberty, as well as the prompt to exit. One card sits between these symbols: The Fool. And below him rests the word “freedom”. “Hop a train,” the dialogue box prompts, complete with a delicate drawing of a train engine. “Chicago and Northwestern,” reads the line below. You are offered a ride to Pierre. A man with the head of a wolf sits across the a lantern-lit table. Light spills in from the two small windows behind him, but the room feels strangely dark. He holds a handful of cards, his eyes bore into you, and he opens his mouth to speak: “Your deepest desires? Your greatest wish? Heaven? Big Rock Candy Mountain, El Dorado, the Promised Land, that place just over the ridge where they all say that the water tastes just like the sweetest wine?”

“A Story About My Uncle”

Again, first person (they aren’t all, I promise). A game about grappling with the disappearance of your uncle, as well as grappling through alien dimensions. Very enjoyable. Gets pretty complicated toward the end. 8/10

“In Sound Mind”

First person. Anthology with an underlying mystery and overarching plot. My entire relationship is founded on our love for this game. Dave should be employee of the month for life.

“While We Wait Here”

First person. Mildly choice-based. Sufficiently weird and decently creepy. Bittersweet and fascinating story. Wasn’t prepared enough and panic-quit the game once because it startled me. Only complaint is that I want it to be longer. 9/10

Finished Spiritfarer a few days ago, and it knocked my absolute lights out. Beautiful. That was definitely me crying.

Playing Maize currently, and it has no captions so I have 2% of an idea about what’s going on. Good puzzles.

Working on reading what I already own before going out to get more, more, more. Just finished Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer (damn), and this is the collection that I’m planning to follow it up with. Bad Cree is a new buy, but the rest have been living on my shelf for a while.
