one of many excellent points: 'It is revealing in hindsight that the first scandal that Starmer’s government blundered into, over ministers receiving freebies, would not have happened had the Labour party followed the same gifting policy that almost every modern organisation does.'
My column in today’s FT: a government with no real vision is reverting to its comfort zone of launching campaigns and drawing dividing lines - against Wes Streeting, on tax. Meanwhile in the real world its position keeps getting worse:

Since we’re in the mood for strict accuracy in broadcast news, worth noting that a rival channel had a pundit - unchallenged - say asylum seekers in hotels committed 44% of sexual offences in one county, seemingly because she cannot understand basic maths.
A national newspaper journalist went on a British TV channel to claim police stats showed asylum-seekers committed 44% of sex crimes in Dorset.
This shocking claim was treated as fact by the channel which promoted the clip on social media where it was amplified by AI.
Except... it's bollocks.

The way the firewall against *outright* gutter racism on the right has disappeared is perhaps the single thing I find most worrying about the world right now
Not to come across like a Telegraph columnist but I actually do think our politicians at the very least should know that in 1856, Britain was not ruled by a king but by Queen Victoria, whose reign is probably one of the more significant to know about! Certainly for a politician!
