Well, when a mid-range Android phone released this year (Pixel 8a) has 8GB RAM, that puts 16GB for laptops in perspective. It's fairly inexpensive to upgrade a lot of older laptops to 16GB RAM, which makes this an attainable target for many people.

I also recommend at least 16GB RAM as a baseline today. A web browser can consume a surprising amount of RAM if you run multiple web apps at once. For new laptops, there are plenty of options with 16GB RAM. A laptop with upgradeable RAM will serve you longer than a laptop with soldered RAM.
