Superficially it’s about a stereotypical butler ( more stiffly English than Jeeves or Carson!) taking a vacation by motoring through England’s countryside, on the way to meet an old friend. He reminisces about the glory days in the 1920’s and 30’s when he was the butler to Lord Darlington. The story is told in the first person by the unreliable narrator, Stevens.
