There were also restaurants on the perimeter that looked good. Since it's been so long, I'd follow normal street food rules: find the longest lines :)
Also, it's going to be crazy on the weekend, but that's part of the fun, I think.

On the weekend it will be a whole experience. I would just browse around and see if any of the merchandise piques your interest. As far as food, it's been 7 years, so I don't really remember the names, but we had amazing duck noodles, boat noodles, pad thai all from stalls inside the market

Have one with everything from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, have amazing pastries at Brauð & Co and/or (preferably and) Sandholt, visit Harpa, go to the penis museum, listen to Sigur Rós while viewing the aurora. Or you know, it's your trip - do whatever you really want to do!
