definitely, some of the most memorable fights in that game too me are side content. most of the main story bosses just don't feel very coherent. they sorta just throw out attacks and there isn't much baiting or creating vulnerabilites. kinda just feel like you're playing by the boss' rules.

i honestly put the game down because of act 3. not that it was too hard, but just because the difficulty that was there wasn't very fun.

i did start with the redux myself, and they didn't seem *super* modernized, lacking fov sliders, missing certain control options, but other than that they worked fine. if you want the more modern experience though, exodus is a very good game on it's own, with about as much content as the other 2

i played the metro games semi recently and thought they were all pretty good. 2033 and last light are a little dated, but they were still overall enjoyable.
