Maybe. It is really well made and incredibly bleak. I could not emotionally connect to it however as it just spent too much time on its villains which were not my cup of tea.

saw high noon and man from the west to round out the theme. High noon specifically as a rebuttal on the necessity of violence is an interesting juxtaposition.

and now thinking about this - the homesteaders vs ranchers that keeps coming up. I do not have the political understanding of that fight but in the movies, they feel like stand-ins for the fight for a more civilized community built around family.

i do think some gangster movies play around with this. The Wire for one. But back to the Westerns, the ones I have seen grapple with the inescapability of violence is also positing community as the civilizing force that will ultimately end the cycle. Which I think is the energy in Shane especially

yup. Did not make the lone gunman not able to escape connection till you mentioned it but I think Shane's canvas is too big to deliver it undiluted the way gunfigher does.
