Less than 1 % of the world’s population are international refugees, asylum seekers or displaced abroad by humanitarian crises (source: @unhrc.bsky.social and @washingtonpost.com) yet our societies project at them all our anger, bias, and xenophobic feelings.

An inspirational public lecture at Mansfield College tonight, w/ Professor Dame Marina Warner CBE, on the idea of home, and how we can imagine sanctuary today, against backdrop of refugee policies that negate personhood. With @helenmountfield.bsky.social as Chair

As an illustration of the positive change that Trump will inevitably bring about in the thinking of governments in Britain and Western Europe, more specifically on immigration, Hague points out that there “is growing interest in rewriting the ECHR”. /3

Also from Conservatives today: former leader, and newly appointed Chancellor at @ox.ac.uk, William Hague, explaining via @thetimes.com that “Trump’s effect may be positive”, and that centre-right and centre-left “can learn from him in some respects”. /2

Praise of Trump non-stop on @gbnewsonline.bsky.social tonight, with former Conservatives Chairman (w/ Liz Truss as PM) Sir Jake Berry attacking the #ECHR and Keir Starmer’s human rights credentials for stopping us acting in the same way.

A v powerful keynote by Baroness Chakrabarti, in the “Human Rights Under Pressure” symposium. Taking her recently published book as point of departure, she presented an enlightened defence of human rights in the face of populism, nationalism, and rise of the right wing.
Admired her pragmatism too

Virtually attending “Human Rights Under Pressure” symposium at Uni of Nottingham. @aoifenolan.bsky.social has spoken very passionately just now about how little attention we still give to poverty as a human right, as scholars and legal systems, and the urgency we need to have in changing course.
