Got so busy with work stuff in October that I didn’t have time to do any Halloween-related drawings. So I’m doing them now.

Here’s an Anatomically Implausible Skeleton of the Skeleton Panda Sea Squirt, Clavelina ossipandae, from the waters around Okinawa.

The name was approved by Powhatan tribal elders, and a naming ceremony was held on November 12th, 2019 at NASA Headquarters. Reverend Nick Miles, Tecumseh Red Cloud of the Pamunkey Tribe performed a traditional Algonquian chant at the ceremony.

In 2014 NASA’s New Horizons mission photographed an unusual object in the Kuiper Belt. Called a contact binary, the object was formed by two icy planetesimals that collided and stuck together.

Photos from a program I taught at my library job about Slime and how animals and plants use mucus and mucilage for defense, movement, hunting, filter-feeding and other fun stuff.

We also made slime from school glue, baking soda, and contact lens solution, but I didn’t get any photos of that.

Wanted to post more Pride anglerfish for June, but COVID knocked me out for 2 weeks.

But Pride doesn’t end with June, so more anglers are a-comin’ .

Today it’s Himantolophus, the Footballfish, in Pansexual Pride colors.

Another Pride angler! This is the Needlebeard Angler, Neoceratias.

Needlebeards completely lack the glowing lure of other anglers. Additionally, their jaws are covered with long teeth outside the mouths. It’s not known what they eat, but their teeth may act as a cage to catch gelatinous prey.

Another Pride anglerfish! Here’s the Wolftrap Angler, Thsumatichthys, with Trans Pride colors.

Wolftraps, also called Wonderfish, have their glowing lures located on the roof of their mouths. They also have wide upper “lips” that can flip down to form a cage around prey lured into their mouth.

Finally getting around to doing some Pride flag creatures. And only halfway through the month!

This year I’m creating Pride flag anglerfish, starting off with the most well-known species, Melanocetus johnsonii.

I wrote a new book! This one is a collaboration with fellow artist Stanton Fink. We made a field guide to the prehistoric ghosts, library spirits, and other oddities of the Garden of Lost Ages.

More Ice Elephants living in icy surface of Enceladus. These critters are collectively nicknamed “hobs” because they live in the tunnels of large ice elephants and help with cleanup, parasite control, and other “household maintenance”. L to R: domovoi, gnome, kobold.

A bioluminescent “sea clown” from the subterranean oceans of the dwarf planet Pluto (yes, that’s a real thing). I drew this way back in January but only recently rediscovered it.
