Given the luxury tax thresholds take into account AAV, and not how much money is paid to the player… aren’t they working as intended re deferrals? If there was a limit on deferrals, the team would just go up to that limit, and AAV likely ends up about the same.

It was also Ohtani’s idea, which at least the Giants and Blue Jays reportedly matched. If he signed with one of those teams the narrative would be about Shohei being selfless and trying to help his team. Instead, a year full of crying about the CBA needing to be changed.
