I feel that what worked in my work with him was sharing what was going through my mind and making explicit the implicit parts of interpersonal relationships when I talked with him or involved him in work with others.

From my point of view, this happens because we treat people (not just neurodivergent ones) as if they don't have a mind. If this is considered 'wrong' for the rest of humanity, I don't understand how it can be a suitable approach for treating those we struggle to understand.
