Update feed for the online CHamoru-English Dictionary, from the volume published by the Department of CHamoru Affairs on Guam
Now using Cloudflare for bot-limiting. Hopefully this doesn't cause too much irritation for human traffic (verification / captcha / loading delays). At least from the server side, this seems to be helping, so hopefully it reduces site freezes from bot scrapes. Let us know if you have issues.

Bot traffic is up a huge amount. July saw it increase from about 2Gb of content to 9Gb. Since they usually scrape in spurts, working on implementing some rate limiting to slow down bots and increase site responsiveness for others during scrapes.

Changes to default search -- now includes searches where the alternate form matches the query, as well as categorizing into exact matches, close matches, and alternate spelling matches.

(2/2) There are some known errors when it interacts with highlighting. Should be worked out later this week. If you run across other issues, respond here, and I'll see what I can do. Currently the morphological parsing runs off a static word list (for reasons), so some roots might not be in dict.

(1/2) BIG update -- CHamoru results pages now have a popup preview when you hover internal links (related forms, see also, etc.), AND when you hover over CHamoru examples it will also try to look up words. If not in the dictionary, it will try to break up the word with through morphological parsing.

T down! Almost all Blust (Austronesian Comparative Dictionary) etymologies incorporated (except Ancient CHamoru numbers (soon), and some plants). Just need to clean up some earlier letters and formatting and origins are done. Yay! Soon 'Not' search in advanced to allow exclusion of Spanish words.

Added up/down arrow selection from dropdown and tweaked how results were showing up there -- now operates more like main search -- ignoring glotta unless the user includes it. Diacritics still ignored, though, due to the specifics of the SQL indexing.

Added dropdown look-ahead / look-behind. Fairly happy with this. It's fast and responsive, which is great, but still could use some tinkering. If you find it's working weirdly, let me know! Also behind the scenes, added an indexing list, so fuzzy search should be about twice as fast now.

S done, just T left to handle markup on

Converted database to utf8mb4 encoding because a few special characters were not showing up. Incidentally, this broke the front page for a bit, which is fixed now. Also, markup on R done.

Markup on P done!

And here are the top queries from the first half of December!
baba (depending on spelling*, 'to open', 'bad', 'whip'...), aliling (a cone-shelled sea creature), gupot (party!), and toktok ('hug'). [*diksionariu returns results with diacritics if you spell without them]

Recently looked at the server logs for December so far. Found this interesting -- here are visits by originating device. (Linux is mostly the bots, lol)

Finally got around to making the Finiho' Ha'åni an actual Word of the Day (previously I just changed it randomly when I felt like it). Big thanks to VZ and JBPT for providing me a year's-worth of entries!

Markup of N done!

Minor tweaks to non-main results. If there are links in other entries (and it's not a compound search), now offers a link to a fuzzy search on the term with the "no results found" and "X results in other entries".

Markup on U done

Markup on Y done

And I thiiink I've got it working in URLs again
Issue where the server (which I can't modify) is considering anything with a leading ~ as a directory. Got a workaround that seems to be working.
Okay, ~ is working with a small hack. Using ~ in URLs causes some issues, so the JS swaps it for ≈ in the URL. Temporary fix, since that's harder to type directly into the URL for those who search that way. Might see if I can adjust the settings on the server redirects...
Strike that -- ~ fuzzy search is acting weirdly. Must be an upload error.... Debugging...

New search function just dropped! Use ~ to go directly to fuzzy search. Fuzzy search also should be more accurate now due to some core improvements. Also, see all the wildcard searches on the About page. Also, refactored the PHP code to detangle some nested ifs into functions. Fun!

Markup formatting through M!

Some back-end modifications to work off of hashed versions of the entries rather than mutable indexes. Should help facilitate simultaneous editing. Seeeeems to be working, but nervous I missed a bug since it required restructuring the database and changes to a bunch of files and processes. 🤞

Oops! Read-view was broken. Not sure for how long. I had accidentally copied files from our entry-edit backend to the main site. :|
Fixed now and updated the PHP to be more flexible so it should not happen again.
