anyway, here's an example... some of these make me laugh, I set them up like 15 years ago (you can just accumulate filters as needed)

eg, the first two are finding emails from a mailing list and labeling them appropriately, so i can just click on those labels later to read them, etc
Shows a screenshot from my gmail's Settings/Filters and Blocked Addresses page. Identifying information is blurred out, but it shows a checkable list of Matches: paired with Do this: . Each Matches describes how the match is to be done, most often on the "from:" line but can be "to:" or "subject:" or even a pattern in the body of the email. the Do this can be anything from delete it, label it, archive it, star it, etc

even the actual map was surprising:
map of california showing the percentage of 'yes' votes on Prop 50 as of Nov 5, 4:20am. it shows deep support as expected along the coastal communities which are also more traditionally blue (in excess of 75% or so) but a strong 50+% even in california's central valley, and no county going below the 30-40% support range. unfortunately the contrasts in each 20% quintile are shown in various shades of low contrast yellow

House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) continues to try to pin the upcoming catastrophic lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding on the Democrats. But with the U.S. Department of Agriculture sitting on $6 billion in funds Congress appropriated for just such an event, the Treasury finding $20 billion to prop up Trump ally Javier Milei in Argentina, Johnson refusing to bring the House into regular session to negotiate an end to the government shutdown, and President Donald J. Trump demanding $230 million in damages from the American taxpayer, bulldozing the East Wing of the White House to build a gold-plated ballroom that will dwarf the existing White House, and traveling to Asia, where South Korean leadership courted him by giving him a gold crown and serving him brownies topped with edible gold, blaming any funding shortfall on Democrats is a hard sell.

(a) Pursuant to sections 212(f) and 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), 8 U.S.C. 1182(f) and 1185(a), the entry into the United States of aliens as nonimmigrants to perform services in a specialty occupation under section 101(a)(15)(H)(i) (b) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(15)(H)(i)(b), is restricted, [highlighted] except for those aliens whose petitions are accompanied or supplemented by a payment of $100,000 - subject to the exceptions set forth in subsection (c) of this section. This restriction shall expire, absent extension, 12 months after the effective date of this proclamation, which shall be 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on September 21, 2025. (b) The Secretary of Homeland Security shall restrict decisions on petitions not accompanied by a $100,000 payment for H-1B specialty occupation workers under section 101(a) (15)(H) (i)(b) of the INA, who are currently outside the United States, for 12 months following the effective date of this proclamation as set forth in subsection (a) of this section. The Secretary of State shall also issue guidance, as necessary and to the extent permitted by law, to prevent misuse of B visas by alien beneficiaries of approved H-1B petitions that have an employment start date beginning prior to October 1, 2026. (c) The restriction imposed pursuant to subsections (a) and (b) of this section [highlighted] shall not apply to any individual alien, all aliens working for a company, or all aliens working in an industry, if the Secretary of Homeland Security determines, in the Secretary's discretion, that the hiring of such aliens to be employed as H-1B specialty occupation workers is in the national interest and does not pose a threat to the security or welfare of the United States.

it's fun when the babies have hatched:
a brandt's cormorant sitting on its nest with two baby cormorants visible underneath. the adult is shiny black, with a substantial hooked bill and a bright blue patch on its chin, with a ring of buff colored feathers around the blue. it is squawking to the heavens and the two baby cormorants below it look like naked scaly little dinosaurs, truly "ugly"! One of the babies is tilting its head up hoping for food, nad the other is still snuggled under the adult. They are in a nest built of seaweed, sand, and other dried plant matter that hangs off a cliff over the ocean (tho only the cliff is visible, blurred in the background)

Torrey Pines today! Some drifting maritime layer, and it’s been hot and muggy but was nice to wade along the waterline
initial view of the beach, a little overcast and foggy but not cold. ocean is on the right coming in gentle waves across the beach in front, and tall cliffs are visible on the left. in the distance you can see other people walking along the beach too. the POV of the photo shows that i’m clearly standing in water when taking it taken with my back to the ocean, there’s a large cliff in front of me with an eroded V shaped fissure in front of me. it’s possible to see many layers of sediment in the cliffs, showing up as horizontal bands of colors and textures. above is blue sky with some clouds and along the beach is a lot of debris from the cliffs as they slowly erode taken from partway up the childhood looking down at a large trapezoidal shaped rock being battered by waves. the rock is roughly 50 feet by 50 feet, flat along the top and about 8-10 feet above the shore but only about 4-5 feet above the water right now on the walk back, looking down the beach but this time with ocean on left and cliffs on the right. much of the fog has burned off and the cliffs are reflected in the wet sand. brilliant blue sky overhead with a tiny bit of fog on the horizon to the right

timeline cleanse! a day out on torrey pines!

photo taken atop flat rock at torrey pines state beach. there is a square-cut hole of unknown origin at the top of the rock (roughly 50 feet square and about 10 feet off the beach, depending on the tide and sand levels). that hole (about 3 feet square) is full of sea anemones and the like, like a very small tide pool. otherwise the top of the rock is extremely rough, almost corrugated. you can see the edge of flat rock and the beach beyond it, with the ocean to the left and tall cliffs to the right. the low tide is exposing a lot of wet sand which is partially reflecting the yellow and orange cliffs (about 100-150 feet high). there is a deep blue sky overhead with no clouds and it is about 5pm in the day photo is looking up at the cliff formations directly above flat rock. there are horizontal layers of yellow, gray, green and orange sediment easily visible photo is taken on the beach where a long-billed curlew is foraging on the wet sand, which is reflecting the cliffs b behind it, the blue sky overhead and the bird itself. the bird has long gray legs, a beige breast, checkered bown and beige back, black stripes like a mask across its eyes and an improbably long and slightly curved bill, where the bill is roughly the length of the bird’s body

Well let's see for #threebirdthursday, I've got three oystercatchers (last May in Ocean Beach, San Diego)
Photo is of three oystercatcher birds looking for snacks on a rocky outcropping next to the ocean. Behind them is mostly white ocean spray from the waves hitting the rocks. The birds are dark brown on their backs with black heads, pale orange/pink legs, bright orange beaks, bright orange eyeliner. They are black oystercatchers but on the west coast, some of them have white bellies and other american oystercatcher markings. The bird on the left is looking in profile to the left; the middle bird is looking back at the water at an angle and standing on one leg (while it contemplates its life choices, perhaps?) and the third bird on the right is looking directly at the water while looking for a morsel. hey #birdsky any help on ID this pretty hawk/falcon? Photo taken in Catalina Island but the jesses on it indicate it's owned by someone and so it's probably not native at all.

Lovely day at the beach today

picture is of a large flat rock in a rough parallelogram shape, flat on top and about 6-8 feet above beach level. its surface is rough and pitted and if u you look closely there is a small square cavity in the center full of seawater. waves are rolling in, the ocean is turquoise close to shore, darkening to blue further out. the sun is overhead so there’s little shadow and no glare. lovely blue sky overhead this is Flat Rock at Torrey Pines Natural Reserve in San Diego, which separates Torrey Pines from the more notorious Blacks Beach to the south.
