Saw this comment on a friend’s Facebook post and it fairly well summed up my feeling about this attitude that I’ve been trying to put into words and failing.

I don’t necessarily agree with the “run for office yourself” part, but the rest of it is spot-on.
Everyone's vote is put together with other people's votes. When you speak so forcefully of "earning your vote", you're not thinking about what politicians have to do to get *other* people's votes. I'm sorry, but you're not the only voter a candidate has to listen to in order to get elected. If it's that important to you, then run for office yourself.

Today I stumbled across a piece of my own history that I'd completely forgotten about.

Turns out, I used to run a political discussion group on LiveJournal, back in the mid 2000's. Started just before W's second term as POTUS.
