The calls they used to use on paddle boats to measure the speed: they would pay out a knotted rope (thus 'knots' as the name for the unit of speed) Shout 'Mark' and after a certain time would call out 'Twain' (or vice-versa on the calls, I can't quite remember the order) and the number of knots...
