Good morning from Kenya.

Before leaving any country we serve, we always try to take some time to pause and experience other aspects of the country. Today we sat by the Indian Ocean in Mombasa. Grateful.

Today while teaching about domestic violence to the women in Kenya, I had a moment. Usually I’m able to hold my lament of just how much violence women experience throughout the world. But today my lament was expressed outwardly in tears in front of this audience that knows violence far too well.

We made it to Kenya and our driver asked where we were from, we told him. He said: “Kamala land, we’re so sorry”. Don’t let anyone tell you to not lament and grieve what just happened in our nation. Because the rest of the world is watching and lamenting with us.

We made it to Qatar for the second leg of our trip to Mombasa. DOHA airport is quite the scene. I wish I had enough time for one of their day tours.

Whenever I leave the US I come to realize how small and not as superior as we make ourselves to be. We’re not above. We’re not below. Just a small piece of the puzzle. I wish we didn’t teach our people to not be so afraid of the other puzzle pieces. We desperately need each other.

Ok ‘Merica I’m heading to Kenya to do the work of my heart and work with women who have experienced trauma. Maybe when I return someone will greet me at the airport and say just kidding.
