Had the opportunity to meet Sree Raghunath Basak, president of Tangail Sari Traders Association at his studio in Pathrail, the birthplace of the Tangail Saree. He is also the leading figure in the case to claim the G.I. for the Tangail Saree of Bangladesh.

academics need to be more invested in their own aesthetic — abhijit banerjee is a good example (of someone who is very much concerned about fashion) that always comes to mind

weekends mean

1) visits from (one of) my mother’s (several) saree-walas (this one is the jamdaniwala)
2) taking this exact same picture from the gym balcony
3) playing with the gym cat

Stumbled while scrolling TikTok, but every time I rewatch Devdas I realize the costume department had them wearing whatever — the blouse is accurate (minus the neckline perhaps) for the times but what is this saree/drape supposed to be?

another tangail i want to highlight is one belonging to my late grandmother. it was gifted to her by my grandmother in the 80s.

most dhotis i own were sarees belonging to women in my family at some point.

i had one of my mother’s old tangail sarees turned into a kurta. it was one of her favourite pieces and now it’s one of mine! i especially loved the radhakrishna embellishments so much i had to make it the front panel

i also wore this last december while presenting part of my research to some lovely students and faculty at the independent university of bangladesh

My favourite Jamdani kurtas

1) “Jhuri buti” scattered patterns connected with diagonal lines
2) “Guinea buti” motifs resembling coins
3) “kodom chaak buti” motifs resembling a wheel
4) “pushpo buti” motifs resembling flowers

My late maternal grandmother’s mala sharee that I now wear as a dhoti occasionally. Heirlooms need not always be fancy handloom pieces.
