What is Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID?

Previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder or MPD, DID is a disorder characterized by the presence of two or more personality states that take control (known as alters), amnesia, and more.

It is caused by chronic childhood trauma.
Myth: DID is very rare

Fact: Roughly 1.5% of the population is diagnosed with DID — that’s about the same as red hair and OCD. That’s not to mention those who are undiagnosed, as DID is a very difficult disorder to diagnose due to lack of research and its covert nature.

Myth: DID is obvious/you can always tell if someone has DID

Fact: DID is covert, and even most people with the disorder will (consciously or unconsciously) downplay and hide their symptoms — even from themselves. Because of this, DID is hard to diagnose.
