Sounds great - a place I’d like to visit. I’ve been to California, Nevada and Utah but never made it to Oregon.

I'm in the UK and we have Great Egrets too, and Cattle Egrets. American Avocets are really nice colourful birds - ours are the black and white version. Interesting that there are so many alike.

Brilliant. Wish we had them more often - just an occasional winter rarity in most of UK.

Thanks Alan - always fun to see what fits. (WTE might be pushing the ‘shallow water’ condition mind).

Saw my first Smew in 1972 aged 12 and was sufficiently smitten to make my own.

Thanks RLZ, that's very kind - I really do wish it was a Cooper's hawk. Some menace in those orange eyes.
We get Sparrowhawks chasing birds from the feeders in our garden too. You can tell when they are about as it goes eerily quiet while the other birds take cover.

Very nice RLZ, but a Cooper's Hawk has no business in Manchester in the UK. If it was it would be a very notable rarity or an escaped bird.
Mine is a juvenile Sparrowhawk (Accipter nisus)
