Birthdays sometimes carry with them great expectations and Dickens’s 21st birthday was no exception. His early hopes of romance were dashed when Maria Beadnell called him a mere ‘boy!’, which possibly served as the inspiration for Estella, one of the most famously frigid young women in literature.

Taught ‘Great Expectations’ before? Consider taking part in this survey for a new volume in the MLA series, ‘Approaches to Teaching World Literature’ edited by Michelle Allen-Emerson and Peter J. Capuano.

How exciting it would have been in 1952 to open vol. 2 and see these!
