The historical record has him being given the specific kind of stipend given to samurai and him being given swords. If he wasn't a samurai he would have had to exist in some kind of special samurai-adjacent category that would have the chuds fuming!

Genuinely drives me spare. As if those bigots would read about a European being given a horse, a lance, a suit of armour, a squire, and heraldry and insist he isn't a knight!
