I say no. It's supporting content for third because the major work that year is to learn multiplication and division within 100. I think students should refine mental math and place value strategies cultivated in second grade so they'll really understand standard algorithms in 4th.

I was able to learn from David as an undergrad and grad student, and then as a teacher and reader. I have followed ed politics through my 30+ years in education and stayed active politically because he lit the fire. His voice and legacy matter. May he rest in peace.

I would be very interested to read the full chapter. Thank you for taking a deep dive into what the evidence says about effective learning for teachers and sharing it with us.

Can you say more about how you structured retrieval practice in your courses?

This has me thinking about gameboards where we count hops or landings. Far more fun and meaningful.

As a district math specialist, helping teachers improve learning despite awful workbook pages is daunting. BTC practices like thin slicing and CYU are helping.

Burn the books!

I had a day with @mathematize4all.bsky.social in AZ recently and I think every educator should have that experience to change hearts and minds about students (and adults) with disabilities.

I have some videos of game play where I nudge into student thinking. I sometimes use them in PD with teachers and pause the video at just the right moment to ask what they might do in response the students' thinking. It's a powerful way to practice that in-the-moment decision-making.

Your description is so helpful. Thank you! I love your process for inviting paras into the game in ways that heighten their awareness of the teaching possibilities. A one pager is such a smart way to help them bring the games into their practice.

I'm most interested how you're structuring the professional learning and supporting implementation with the paras. I love idea of building capacity this way and making their work with students more joyful.

Can you share more info about this project? We are finding game-based PD super helpful for alt cert teachers in special education. Brilliant idea for paras.
