At Ucross & reflecting on the fact that I would not be here if not for Alice Wong. I found my way back to writing through a group for young adult cancer survivors. A piece that I started in that group turned into an essay that Alice published in Disability Visibility.

I am still here.

The air is yellow again today.

Now mind you, I grew up on a farm here in North Carolina but I ran barefoot through grass & straw & clay & didn't have so much as a sniffle. Now as an adult I turn into a sneezey, runny nosed mess every March.

Please plant some female trees, NC! We are struggling!

Most of the creative writing I did was for my book (eek!) I am still processing the time that I spent @macdowell1907.bsky.social. So grateful for the time and space to create.

It has truly been an honor to serve on the Child Neurology Society board and represent the South for the past two years. I can't wait to see how this society grows!

Sometimes it's hard to believe that I had cancer & a stroke & came out mostly intact. But sometimes I get stuck in moments that feel too immediate to be memories. When I am transported back 12 years to my bed in the ICU. I still have good days & bad days. But I am still here.

Dicey passed away in March but I was still getting emails with her name on them. I messaged Chewy about it last night and found this on my doorstep this evening.
