the director kinda looks like terry pratchett and has this soothing, distinguised, articulate voice and he may make me feel a bit weak in the knees at times

i went to see a stage play produced by one of my american students (who invited me) and directed by a likely future student. i complimented the director at the end and he pulled me in for a hug and seemed genuinely deeply moved which made me feel all fuzzy

yes putting a little plush toy on the edge of my desk looking at my students and telling them "mr potato believes you can do this" is silly, but my students actually do seem more focused and confident when mr potato is on the desk

exactly, that's why i never hold bad opinions against people unless they're very clearly driven by hatred and not just misinformation. we can't expect regular people to know everything

the thing about political conversations is they're not about policies or statistics. they're about feelings. it may be uncomfortable to have to admit it, but they are. and if you accept it, you can much nudge people in the right direction even if they have a completely different perspective

it is quite easy to get people to see politics from your point of view if you don't let them realise you're arguing against them. if you present things as being from their perspective and let them see how your opinion is in their best interests, they'll think it's their opinion

i told an old guy i was unionised and he said he used to be a business owner and was not a fan of unions. i talked about it calmly and by the end of the conversation he was all like "well rachel i am so happy i got to meet you" hihi
