Text from book page 116: "My mother was born in Brooklyn, where I grew up. She was responsible for the Breakfast Program in New York. She was a regular contributor to the Party newspaper, and she worked diligently to free the Panther 21. Her first job was the people. She had a heightened sense of analysis, and she was searching for her kin, for her people. She found them in the Black Panther Party. For her the Party was one of the only places where a vision for the economic base for revolutionary change was articulated and discussed. My mom loved the Community Survival Programs because she knew the Party wasn't filling in for the state. It was building a beloved community, the kind of community where you're bringing food to families and teaching kids. My mom had sickle cell anemia. The Black Panther Party was the only national political organization that took on the issue of sickle cell anemia. At the time, there was no research. There were no treatments, except blood transfusions. My mom died from repeated blood transfusions at the age of 59. Now people are living longer. Children are being healed from sickle cell anemia with new treatments. My mother was also drawn by Fred Hampton's idea of transracial alliance along the lines of class. She learned about white resentment, the relationship between the Black struggle and the class struggle of the white working class. She also felt that the Black Panther Party was one of the most explicitly feminist Black organizations that she participated in. It's the reason why she could openly support me as a queer person, coming out at age 12. The party was the only Black organization in the country at that time that had a commitment to dealing with, and working with queer people. My mom was a firm fighter for Black liberation, and she was also a humanist. She loved people. She was sensitive and empathetic. She was the most loyal person I've ever met. I am reminded of Toni Morrison's statement about how racism is a deliberate attempt to distract Black people from living the lives they want to live by distracting them with noxious, unnecessary tasks, that in the moment they present themselves, feel like a dire existential assault.

The mask & mantle is Chashu- he's a former street kit as evidenced by his roguish clipped ear.
Don Piccolo Arancini (aka Peeeeeks!) is the tabby tigre & he's a shameless cuddler and high jumping speed demon.
