GeXer here, born ‘69. I had printed volumes of Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes, The Far Side, Doonesbury, and
others. Early 80s I was really into Garfield and bought every book. In the 70’s I remember having a few Peanut’s books.

2/ (Forgive me if I didn’t get the quote right; I can’t find the book in my kid’s trashed room!!)

In a few panels you taught Phoebe (and readers) that we don’t own those we idolize—they are individuals with their own feelings, wants, and needs.

1/ There‘s a moment early in Phoebe and her Unicorn—so early it was still “Heavenly Nostrils”!—that I still think about a lot. Phoebe realizes that wishing for Marigold to be her “best friend“ didn’t mean she could USE her to impress her classmates.

“Then you should have wished for that.“

Don’t you just love it when people frame kindness as weakness?

It worked. What a great photo of you!

And that dress is fire

I mean, it‘s such a common and bad-faith diversion tactic: quibble about words or tone to shift the discussion away from the point. i guess it works often enough to keep doing it? smh

It certainly has the effect of soothing their cognitive dissonance. “The country may be on fire, but it‘s not my fault… the Dems didn’t do enough to earn my vote! *shrug*”

(P.S. every time I see your Danacorn avatar I hear “…and ANOTHER thing…!!” in my head)

OMG the tail cozy!!

That tracks. The “Others” back then were the Irish and the Italians—hence the on-the-nose character named “Martini” that George Bailey gives a loan to, and why Potter berates him for helping out “garlic eaters”.

Today, Potter would be against treating Somali or Hispanic immigrants with respect.

My experience with kid now is they don’t groan about ‘old music’ the way we did (Gen-X… at least my crowd!). Thanks to streaming (and TikTok), kids now will listen to whatever speaks to them and I think that’s cool.

I can’t remember where I saw a response to a lament that pop music is so terrible “these days” and kids today won’t have their “Led Zeppelin“. The response was, “They *do* have ‘their Led Zeppelin’—it’s *Led Zeppelin!*”

(Clear/Present danger) That silent, slow motion, ignored pitch in the batting machine scene sticks with me as one of the great moments in visual storytelling. You can *feel* the stomach-sinking “oh… **SHIT!**”

Well played. And every joke response I was ready to post had already been made 🤣

It is shamefully underrated

IMO, progressives benefit by having MANY people focusing on DIFFERENT causes rather than scolding others (unless they are doing real harm somehow).

I don’t get her issue with nonbinary people. I have an enby and a bisexual kid so I hear about enby hate and bi-erasure in both ears 😞.
November 2, 2025 at 1:14 PM
I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I’ve known people who become so deeply committed to ONE cause that they become angrily indignant when others don’t join them at the tip of their particular spear, while blithely dismissing other causes or marginalized groups as somehow less important.

I’m so tired of people self-righteously staking out some sort of “reasonable” middle ground when it comes to human rights. Arms folded and humming smugly about just trying to be the rational one among extremes on “both sides” 🙄
November 1, 2025 at 10:47 PM
I hope Marigold isn’t jealous that you are as pointy as she is—perhaps pointier!

Agreed.

Great portrait too. Love the simple lighting… reflection off the giant pot lid is perfect!

Incidentally, when they were little they started reading Phoebe and her Unicorn and loved it so much asked me to buy all the books when they came out. Neither of us knew you were trans. I told them and they responded in the most GenZ way possible, with a single word: “slay.” 😆

My enby kid has been feeling the same way… my Canadian colleagues have told me I have a job in their office if we decide to move.

After years of struggling to keep their schedules, commuters are optimistic that Mussolini will make the trains run on time.
