Yapping about how Tech and Geopolitics affect our future | Data Science and Public Policy | London School of Economics
UK unveiled a new AI Opportunities Action Plan:

- Will use AI to improve public sector activities in "Growth Zones"

- Govt might invest in a supercomputer

- Could also create a lot of new jobs, with significant investment from big tech.

- Visa restrictions for AI experts will likely be relaxed

Why is Trump eying Panama?

- The canal sees a high number of Chinese ships, second only to the US

- Since the canal expansion project, it's become even more economically lucrative

- The US gave up the canal in 1999...something the new administration considers a mistake

Still seems implausible

Can AI prevent suicides?

- Reports claim that doctors can use AI which flags patients with a high risk of self harm

- Doctors can then initiate conversations about mental health with them

- My concern: will the automated detection systems use our personal data? What kind of data can it access?

Recent events are evidence that "knowledge is power" is more relevant than ever

In an era where information information travels further and faster, those who control information flow hold immense unchecked power...

...for better or (more likely) for worse

Predictive policing is controversial...Here's why

An algorithm determines where and when crimes will occur based on past data, and the police allocate resources on the basis of that...

...BUT the issue is that if the data is biased, there's a chance the algorithm mainly targets minorities

2025 is a lighter year for elections, but still has some important ones:

🇩🇪 Issues with the ruling coalition...centre right CDU likely to win

🇨🇦 Inflation, noisy neighbours, and low ratings for Trudeau

🇨🇱 Right wing opposition
coalition expected to win

Another tough year for the left globally 😞

Should AI be used for healthcare?

That depends:

It is a VERY useful tool for preliminary diagnosis, really effective at catching out abnormalities

BUT you still need a doctor to make the final call. AI is only as good as the data it's fed

Year of elections!

Big wins for democracy in some parts of the world, dwindling hope for it in others...

...Clean sweeps which shocked us, to tight elections we all got wrong.

A year of ups, and in equal measure downs, but undoubtedly 2024 was very very consequential

Good summary of what the big players in AI have been upto:

- Samsung was early to the punch in adopting AI

- Google has been at the front in terms of bold innovation (pixel 9 particularly)

- Apple was a little slower in jumping aboard the AI hype

For anyone wondering what this whole greenland buzz is about:

- Greenland has gradually been moving towards more autonomy

- It has massive potential in terms of energy (wind and hydrogen in particular)

- It's located on important Arctic sea routes

So Amazon is jumping into the AI race big time!

- Nova: Large language models to challenge chatGPT

- Rainier: supercomputer to train AI

- Trainium2: chips to compete with GPU leaders like Nvidia

Promising early signs, but are they too late to the party?

So there's apparently political turmoil in Europe

- Government collapse in France

- Shaky coalition in Germany

-Massive jump in EU defence spending (i.e. less investment in other sectors?)

Will be interesting to see how businesses and major players in tech react
