I’d be surprised if Bernardo doesn’t start- probably alongside Hatate. Zagreb, for whatever reason, were incredibly poor and Rangers are in better form, so it’ll be a step up in quality. Hatate giving away possession as cheaply as he has been lately could be viewed as potentially too costly!

You’ve generally got two buckets with Hatate- one with great stuff in it, and one with shit. When they’re about even, or the shit is slightly more overflowing, it’s time to get him off.

I accept him for what he is, but he’s had a lot of bad with the good lately.

That isn’t to say Engles was bad- I just thought Bernardo was the standout midfielder amongst McGregor and Hatate.
December 10, 2024 at 9:16 PM
Based purely on “in the moment” memory- hard disagree on that one. I thought Bernardo had a great game. He’s not a relentless attacking threat, but I thought as an all-rounder he was good.

It was on the tip of my tongue all night long. It’s been on the tip of my tongue since about the 75th minute in Atalanta. They keep proving me wrong- even though I’m disappointed with the performance tonight.

In isolation, pretty disappointed with a draw. Celtic really lacked the spark in attack, and I think they gave away more chances on the whole than they generated.

To be disappointed with a draw away in the Champions League is quite telling though. It’s been a great showing so far, all in.

He was poor against Aberdeen, in fairness. I still think he has the ability to pick a forward pass in a way Taylor doesn’t quite. Either way, the left wing gets targeted.

I’d have chosen Valle tonight, Taylor Sunday. But in Brendan we trust!
December 10, 2024 at 4:52 PM
My only complaint would be Taylor. I think at the CL level, Valle has probably looked more promising.

Kayal, really? My memory of him was that he was excellent- but maybe I’m misremembering!
December 9, 2024 at 5:04 PM
Honestly, I think it’s a pretty get scenario all in. Their form might turn a corner for a bit, but to what end? This will placate enough Rangers fans that Clement stays longer- they were ready to protest in the build up to this game!
December 5, 2024 at 8:36 AM
My kneejerk reaction after about 60 mins would’ve been to take him off instead of Bernardo- but that’s why I’m not a manager.

We’re getting what we’ll get with Hatate, he’s not going to be on fire consistently. Rodgers wasn’t afraid to drop Engles, but he’s kept Reo in there for a reason.
December 4, 2024 at 10:56 PM
I agree, I think he’s a good option and should probably start to be looked to in certain games. I’d hope a 9m player isn’t in the same profile as McCowan- signed primarily for the “lesser” games!

The conditions of the game probably suited Idah more, but I think in a game of that magnitude, Kyogo is going to get the nod almost every time. Honestly, it’s hard to draw conclusions- those conditions were so poor that even basic things were flying in crazy directions.

Has every goal been from outside the box, also?

Very impressive stuff- disappointing there’s no youth players on the bench to come on and have a go, though. These are the type of games they should surely be getting a chance.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how difficult it is to get both a good footballer and a strong, athletic one to a club like Celtic. Oftentimes you’ll have to compromise one for the other.

I said in another post: a guy who can produce the magic without his level of inconsistency doesn’t enter his third (fourth?) season with Celtic- he’s long gone. Like Maeda, you have to accept the bad with the good.

There’s a reason he’s still at Celtic. When he’s performing well, he can pull off stuff that would easily get him a move to a better team/league, but his inconsistency is likely why he’s still there. He’s still worth the risk for me, but some of his decisions on the ball can be crazy at times.

I was happy with a point at the time, however the reality of the result is a bit deflating. Celtic, realistically, have 2 games to try and get a win. YB looks a winnable game, but many would’ve said the same against Brugge at home. The players need to be on their game, every game at this level!
November 28, 2024 at 8:30 AM
I think a lot of Celtic regaining possession in the second half was by design- Brugge had something to protect. They aren’t an amazing team (better would’ve hammered Celtic last night) but seemed a really astute one at that level. Still think Celtic could’ve beat them on another night though!
November 28, 2024 at 8:26 AM
Brugge did a job on Celtic for a solid 45-55 mins of that game. Too many players were off it tonight for Celtic, also. AJ and Kuhn couldn’t get any link up play down the right, Hatate couldn’t make an impact, and Engles was poor. A good result considering, but a shame because they’re beatable.

10 minutes too late, so far!
November 27, 2024 at 9:14 PM
He’s a young guy, but yeah, I think if he didn’t cost 11m, he’d be benched unquestionably. Feels harsh to point the finger solely at him- I can’t recall McGregor or Hatate doing what’s required of them- but he can’t come out for that second half.
