I stumbled on this reflection from Eleanor Roosevelt when researching my book (see below). As the HQ opened, she was worried that many Americans were uncomfortable that their flag would fly as an equal amongst 60 and alongside the UN flag.

It feels bittersweet to be at the UN HQ on the day it turns 80. Yes, a day to celebrate what the United Nations system has achieved in these eight decades. But, watching as the flags were being hoisted this morning reminded how fragile the system is today.

For too long the development sector has ignored rising wealth inequality. Orgs like the World Bank & the IMF have a key role to play in measuring & addressing extreme wealth. Join this great panel at next week's Annuals at 11am EST on 15 Oct. Livestream at www.worldbank.org/en/events/20...

The arrest of nearly 500 peaceful protestors on Saturday is just the latest attack on civic freedoms in the UK. We may think of the UK as a vibrant democracy but the developments of the last few years are really worrying, as catalogued in the CIVICUS Monitor monitor.civicus.org/country/unit... 1/2

Good to hear @eddavey.libdems.org.uk put cheaper, more accessible renewable energy at the heart of the @libdems.org.uk vision for the future of the British economy. And glad he sees "fiscal responsibility as a means not an end in itself". @ippr.org

Today's Leeds Reforms & Mansion House speech are based on two problematic myths: that financial services hold the key to good growth & that regulations are holding us back. Some reflections on another exciting day in economic policy.

Am super excited to be speaking at the first event in the newly reopened Redhills Durham Miners Hall, home of the Pitman's Parliament. What a place to be talking about people power!

It is a privilege to share a page in today's @theguardian.com with @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social one of our family's favourite writers. And what a powerful poem. I wish they'd headlined my piece An Island of Have-yachts and Have-nots

And as this fabulous @migrationmuseum.org event this evening reminds us that, yes Britain is changing, but we will thrive if we lean into the art of belonging

An island of strangers or a beacon of solidarity?

This amazing, diverse Mancunian choir earlier today was an inspiring reminder of how we can create a positive future based on shared belonging if we lean on each other...

Many argue that we have historically high levels of total aid but take out in-country costs, aid to Ukraine & climate funding and actual aid to the poorest countries is historically low - and likely bare the brunt of cuts, including by the UK. See this chart from ODI odi.org/en/insights/...

Some thoughts ahead of the Chancellor's #SpringStatement later today. Sticking to arbitrary fiscal rules is a choice & cutting spending is unlikely to deliver savings in the long run. Follow @neweconomics.bsky.social for updates and commentary during the day

Fantastic turnout for a timely discussion of Extreme Wealth at @lseinequalities.bsky.social event this evening.

Here is the report that we did with @patrioticmillionaires.org on what rich people & policymakers think about an extreme wealth line

Such a shame to see Anneliese Dodds leave UK Government. I share the concerns in her letter. It was a 'tactical decision', i.e. an active choice, to use aid to pay for arms & it will be impossible to pay for the things the PM promised with what is left of actual aid (minus asylum costs, multilats)

At a time when net finance flows to developing countries has turned negative, this is going to be extremely painful. More on all this in a report out today from UK's independent aid commission icai.independent.gov.uk/major-shifts...
