I'm a writer, editor, teacher, and political activist. I try to treat others the way I'd like to be treated. When all else fails, be kind.
Had to turn on the heat this morning. In FLORIDA? Nutty.

OK, Trump won. Now what?

Democracy only survives in the U.S. if we work to support it. We must all speak out. Need ideas? Looking for some hope?

Join our Seattle Supports Democracy Call of Reflection and Action this coming Thurs, Dec. 5th, at 6 p.m. Pacific.

The events of November 5th, which put Donald Trump and his MAGA allies back into power, came as a shock to some, a disappointment to many, and a frightening sign for all of us who care about democracy...

Lesson 5 from Timothy Snyder’s great book “On Tyranny”

5. Remember Professional Ethics

When political leaders set a negative example, professional commitments to just practice become more important. It is hard to subvert a rule-of-law state without lawyers, or to hold show trials without judges.

Lesson 4 from Timothy Snyder’s book “On Tyranny”:

"The symbols of today enable the reality of tomorrow. Notice the swastikas and the other signs of hate. Do not look away, and do not get used to them. Remove them yourself and set an example for others to do so.”

(Here I think of MAGA graffiti.)

Lesson 3, Snyder’s “On Tyranny”:

"The parties that remade states and suppressed rivals were not omnipotent from the start. They exploited a historic moment to make political life impossible for their opponents. Support the multiparty system and … [v]ote in local and state elections while you can.”

Lesson 2 from Snyder’s “On Tyranny”:

“It is institutions that help us to preserve decency. They need our help as well. ... Institutions do not protect themselves. They fall 1 after the other unless each is defended from the beginning. So, choose an institution you care about … and take its side.”

Book: “On Tyranny,” Timothy Snyder
Lesson 1: Do Not Obey in Advance

"Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want and then offer themselves without being asked… teaching power what it can do.”

One of the advantages of living in a red state (Florida) is I can call my Republican senators and vehemently tell them to OPPOSE Gabbard, Hegseth, Gaetz, and Kennedy for Trump's cabinet. So I did. We need Senate Republicans to step up and reject Trump's extremist picks. #SpeakUp #DemocracyInAction

I'm looking to get involved in protests against the deportation actions that Trump is planning. Let me know if you want me to loop you in on what I learn. Remember, if there is vocal public opposition, Trump will back down or alter his plans. The people have a voice too.
Local immigration advocacy support groups. Share widely.
To mark "Trump will declare a national emergency for mass deportations" day: here is the initial spreadsheet of our crowd-sourced *local* immigration advocacy/support organizations.

Please share widely, put to good use, and keep letting me know about more organizations folks can connect with.

Welcome to the Resistance. Actions I have taken so far:

-Set up recurring donations to Common Power and ACLU.
-Listened to strategy calls for Indivisible and Swing Left. Will join local chapters in St. Pete or start them if necessary.
-Joined BlueSky and deactivated my X account.

Howdy. I'm here to help fight the MAGA agenda and push back on Trump's attacks on our vital democratic norms and freedoms. Fascism has no place in America. Please follow me if you want to be a part of this work. (Or, if you know me IRL or we went to school or worked together.) Let's Effing Go.
