To be fair they only got to do research because they were funded. Galileo wasn't well liked by academia at all; at his time Heliocentrism and Copernicus were niche.

Galileo was trialled because of his insults to the clergy. He insulted academics too, even/specially ones which time proved right

Yes, but looking at each discipline they've all learned their methods by learning from other disciplines - Sociologists still use statistics - that's because there are transferable qualities - a general culture of how good research should be made: Rooting out biases has similar best practices etc
