Paula should know the Jewish law that should apply to such instances, e.g., Lev 19:34: "The alien who resides among you shall be to you as a citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God" (cf. Lev 19:18, love your neighbor)

Finally had a chance to attend a service at Howard Thurman's former church (1944-1953), The Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples, in San Francisco. Had a wonderful conversation with members of the congregation during the "social hour" and meal after the service. What a fantastic place!

advertising campaign, but they rejected it. Benton instead had to submit a new work, Tobacco Sorters, depicting a white farmer and his daughter and has a version of First Crop in the background. I saw this painting at Nasher Art Museum at Duke University. (2/2)

I've long been fascinated with the art of Thomas Hart Benton (e.g., his Prodigal Son). This 1944 painting, First Crop, portrays impoverished African American farmers harvesting tobacco. It was commissioned by the American Tobacco Company (along with works by other artists) to be used in an (1/2)
