I have to imagine the schizophrenic nature of our tariff policy can't be helping Fed planning. Perhaps potus could settle that the *&#@ down before throwing any more stones.

Doesn't this blow a hole in the argument that these are exactly the sort of goods we need to be able to manufacture in the US for national security reasons (which may be addressed with EO's)?

Meanwhile, there are cost accountants and data engineers all over the place trying to figure out what the hell *anything* cost their company this week. I'm certain none of them will make assumtions that work out so they pay less in taxes, and we'll have nobody to review the taxes. Genius.

Thanks for the link. I'm comfortable signing the petition as-is, but I'd love to see the scope tightened to just eliminating the veto power. I thing the remaining points make sense, but probably should stand as actions of the nations of the world once their votes count.

But, maybe it's the detox the rest of the world needs. I'm going to wish for a real UN (without a security council with God-mode veto power) for Xmas, too.

As pointed out by James Surowiecki on X, the calculation of tariff rates *is* actually very formulaic -- the formula just has nothing at all to do with any tariff enacted by these other nations. Instead, it's based on our trade deficit with these respective nations.

James Surowiecki on X: "Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us. So we" / X

Perhaps it's time you sent a comet. I'll understand.
