I was today years old when I learned humid is a quality of air only. Not surfaces or objects. False cognates were a fun a topic when learning ESL but “úmido” (Portuguese word used to describe surfaces or objects that are neither dry, nor wet) never crossed my radar.

Infinite regress is part of Münchhausen’s trilemma, named by Albert (Albert’s trilemma), based on Popper’s trilemma, who attributes it to Fries (Fries’ trilemma), which was based on Sextu’s trilemma that comes from Agrippa’s trilemma, which are three of his five arguments, ending the regress.

While I add some edge correction and population weights to a conflict exposure analyses we’re preparing; I’ll run a poll.

Which color scheme works better to display conflict intensity (number of events and fatalities in a year)? Real data for Mali in 2023.

Vote by row and column.

Anyone who thinks data analysis is something you can safely delegate to someone who ‘knows Python/R/Stata/etc’ but does not know your study and data in-and-out should have their scientific credentials stripped. And their sanity checked.

A timely thread… as I recover from this shocker. What level of insanity is this? This is the publication fee for one paper in a journal that publishes a few hundred papers each year. 10,400 USD, but *only* 8,360 USD after the discounts…

(🧵) This thread from a retired journalism professor who helped usher in the era of metajournalism in the 2010s—and has written a book on the relationship between Trump and Epstein as part of his NYT-bestselling Proof Series—explains how to report properly on the Trump-Epstein Scandal.

Here we go.

"The problem is that when it is installed in a health sector that prizes efficiency, surveillance and profit extraction, AI becomes not a tool for care and community but simply another instrument for commodifying human life."

In other words, embedding health supremacy, ableism, racism, eugenics.
A masterful essay worth everyone’s time.
I have a feature essay for The Guardian today on the mirage of AI medicine, why care cannot be automated, and how overwhelming uptake of AI by American health capitalism threatens to undermine the very possibility of democracy.
